60 Years | IKS
On June 14, 2024, the Institute for Communication Systems (IKS), formerly known as the Institute of Communication Systems and Data Processing (IND), celebrated its 60th anniversary.
Significant milestones in the history of an institute are marked by new appointments, which set new priorities in teaching and research. The institute was founded in the 1960s under the leadership of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tafel and was named "Communication Systems and Data Processing," focusing on topics such as fluidics and traffic control technology.
The appointment of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Vary in the 1980s coincided almost simultaneously with the introduction of the digital mobile communication system GSM. Starting in the 1980s and 1990s, nearly all analog communication systems were rapidly replaced by digital standards, partly leading to significant changes in everyday life.
Nine years ago, at the brink of the institute's 50th anniversary, a change in leadership was already on the horizon, culminating in the symbolic handing over of the institute key to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Jax. Subsequently, the institute was renamed to the Institute for Communication Systems, and new research topics, courses, and various innovations were established.
As part of a celebratory colloquium with an evening event, the 60th anniversary was celebrated together with project partners, colleagues, and many alumni. The event provided insights into the development of digital speech and audio communication. It also offered an opportunity to look back on the past six decades and discuss future challenges and opportunities in the field of communication systems.
