This thesis investigates Blind identification of Polar Codes in noisy channels, addressing a key opportunity in modern communication systems. The objective is to develop a method to allow the receiver to detect and classify the coding parameters without any prior knowledge of them. This technique is not only crucial for adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) systems, avoiding excessive signaling of control information, but also plays an important role in defense by allowing the detection of intercepted messages.
The complexity of handling the detection from Polar Codes arises from two main factors. First, there is a lack of research regarding Blind approaches given its recent adoption to the 5G standards. Another limiting factor is the flexibility in the code construction regarding the
Frozen bit allocation. This increases the number of possible settings for this code. On the other hand, the Generator matrix for Polar Codes has interesting characteristics, such as being recursive and self inverse. Those construction properties help to handle the complexity introduced by the Frozen bit allocation.
The thesis includes a novel solution to handle different coding sizes and rate-matching scenarios such as Puncturing and Shortening, with a focus on identifying the relevant settings for decoding algorithms. The structure of Polar Codes tested along this study follows the 3GPP standards and the approach is based on a Conformity Function technique to identify the whether a candidate Parity Check matches to the observed data.
